(n. 7 nov. 1917, Germiston, Sudáfrica).

Legisladora sudafricana nacida en Transvaal. Proveniente de una familia de inmigrantes lituanos, se graduó en la Universidad de Witwatersrand, donde después enseñó historia económica (1945–52). Elegida para el parlamento en 1953, ella y otras 11 personas formaron el Partido Progresista para oponerse al apartheid. Fue la única del grupo en ser reelegida en 196l; hasta 1974 emitió el que solía ser el único voto en contra de un creciente número de medidas a favor del apartheid. En 1978 recibió el premio de derechos humanos de la ONU. Hasta su retiro en 1989, siguió siendo una voz importante en el Parlamento sudafricano.
